Police were alerted to the whereabouts of Abouyaaqoub after a woman called in about a suspicious looking man. Authorities caught up with the suspect on a road in Subirats. When police approached, he reportedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ – ‘God is greater’ in Arabic and that was when the police opened fire, killing him on the spot.

Initially, police did not confirm that the man they killed was the main suspect in the Las Ramblas attack. But several Spanish news organizations already reported that it was Younes Abouyaaqoub.

The 22-year old Moroccan fled the scene after ramming a van into pedestrians at Las Ramblas on Thursday. He escaped on foot evading police. Abouyaaqoub is believed to have hijacked a car to go through checkpoints set up after the attack. Later, a car was found with its owner stabbed in the back seat becoming the 15th death in the Barcelona terror attack.
