Rumored Mt. Banahaw Eruption Due to Batangas Earthquake a HOAX!

Rumors that Mount Banahaw will erupt have spread on social media. The eruption of Mt. Banahaw is purportedly linked to the earthquake in Batangas last night. However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has slammed the rumor as a hoax!

According to the rumor, the 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Batangas Tuesday night will lead to the eruption of Mt. Banahaw. Circulated on social media, the post, which is attributed to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), warns that the whole Calabarzon area especially Quezon, Laguna and Batangas are in danger because Mount Banahaw ‘can erupt anytime’.

“Please be ready. All areas in CALABARZON including Quezon, Batangas, Laguna, and Cavite and all in the circulatory areas of Mt. Makiling and Mt. Banahaw. As of 9:01:31 04-04-17, PHIVOLCS recorded a magnitude 2.1. PHIVOLCS Superiors alarmed that Mt. Banahaw can erupt anytime. NDRRMC# 298-5638,” said the hoax.

But Phivolcs said it has not made any such prediction, and warned the public against believing such rumors. The agency added only announcements posted at its official website are to be believed.
