The body of Joanna Demafelis arrived in Manila at a little past 10:00 AM on Friday. At the airport waiting for her were two of Demafelis’ siblings, Joejet and Jessica, who could not contain their emotions. As the coffin was unloaded from the plane, the Demafelis siblings became hysterical especially as they recounted what Joanna went through in the hands of her employers before she died.

According to the autopsy report, Joanna Demafelis had several broken ribs and contusions. She also suffered from internal bleeding. These are signs, according to the authorities, that the OFW was beaten up, if not tortured, leading to her death. The autopsy also revealed that Demafelis was already dead when she was put inside the freezer.

Also on hand at NAIA were DFA secretary Alan Peter Cayetano and OWWA officials.

Kuwait police discovered the OFW’s body inside the freezer by accident. They went to the apartment to serve an eviction order on the OFW’s employers but found the place abandoned with the freezer still running.

Because of Demafelis’ death, the Philippines announced a total ban on OFW deployment to Kuwait last week. Covered by the ban are new hires across all jobs while returning overseas Filipino workers, aka Balik Manggagawa, are exempted from the ban.

A manhunt is already underway to find the OFW’s Lebanese employer and his Syrian wife.
