Buco Vendor Allegedly Beaten by MMDA Personnel in Pasay Clearing Ops

A video of a buco vendor being ‘mauled’ by Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel is Pasay has gone viral. The buco vendor sustained a back eye during the encounter. But MMDA personnel said it was the buco vendor who was the aggressor, who even threatened to hit them with a block of ice.

The violence in the Pasay sidewalk clearing operations is now under investigation. The MMDA immediately suspended the personnel involved in the altercaytion pending a thorough investigation. Aside from the video posted on Facebook by netizen Mhean Capaycapay, the MMDA has reportedly obtained the CCTV video of the barangay to provide another perspective into the incident.

The altercation involving the buco vendor, identified as Romnick Relos, occurred on Friday, March 2, at around 2:00 PM. But it wasn’t until Capaycapay posted the video on Friday night that the incident caught everybody’s attention. Some netizens were quick to condemn the violence based on what the video showed. However, the MMDA said their personnel have their own version of what happened and this is what the investigation will establish.

“May version din kasi ‘yung mga personnel from sidewalk clearing operations group na ‘yung buko vendor ay may hawak na yelo, tinatakot silang babatuhin, napapalibutan din sila ng mga vendors, and at the same time, masyado na ring arogante and violent ‘yung nasabing buko vendor… The reason kung bakit uminit ‘yung sitwasyon, nagkaroon ng komosyon du’n sa area,” said Pialago, as quoted by GMA News.

According to MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago, the personnel concerned were immediately suspended by Francis Martinez, head of the Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group of the MMDA. They have also been summoned by MMDA chairman Danilo Lim.
