Duterte Son & Son-in-Law Summoned to Senate Hearing on Customs Mess

Paolo Duterte and Manases Carpio, the son and son-in-law of President Rodrigo Duterte, have been summoned before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on corruption in the Bureau of Customs resulting to the smuggling of P6.4 billion worth of shabu found in a Valenzuela warehouse. Both Paolo Duterte and Mans Carpio have declared their intention of attending the hearing. Carpio is married to Sara Duterte.

“We have received an invitation from the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to attend their hearing on Thursday, September 7,” said Paolo ‘Pulong’ Duterte and Manases ‘Mans’ Carpio in a joint statement.

“We duly recognize the coercive powers of the Senate of the Philippines as part of the legislative branch of government and their authority to conduct an inquiry in aid of legislation. We commit to respect the invitation and attend the hearing.”

Duterte and Carpio were mentioned by Customs fixer Mark Taguba in his earlier testimonies. Taguba said he heard the names of Paolo Duterte and Manases Carpio mentioned by his Customs contacts, particularly the Davao Group. However, Taguba later absolved the two in a statement he issued last week.

In the statement, Taguba said he never implicated Paolo Duterte and Manases Carpio in the Customs mess and what he said about the two in his earlier testimonies were just based on hearsay.

The attendance of Duterte and Carpio before the Senate hearing is scheduled on Thursday, September 7.
