Earthquakes Strike PH: Multiple Tremors Rock Lanao, Bukidnon & Batangas

A series of earthquakes rocked the Philippines in the last 24 hours. A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Calatagan, Batangas Saturday night and a series of at least 4 strong earthquakes rocked the areas of Lanao de Sur and Bukidnon in Mindanao.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), all the earthquakes were tectonic in origin and damage to property is  not expected in the affected areas.

The earthquake in Calatagan, Batangas struck at 9:30 PM and had a depth of 157 kilometers. Intensity II in Calatagan, Batangas; Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro; Calapan, Oriental Mindoro and Intensity III in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro; Morong, Bataan were registered.

The series of earthquakes in Mindanao began at 1:48 AM of Sunday with a magnitude of 4.2 in Lanao del Sur. This was followed by a 5.4 magnitude tremor at 4.47 AM and a 4.3 magnitude earthquake all around the same area.

The latest tremor of the series was recorded at 10:39 AM today with a magnitude of 4.0 also in Lanao del Sur but in between that and the early morning tremors, at least seven other quakes were recorded by Phivolcs in the areas of Lanao, Bukidnon and Agusan del Sur ranging in magnitude from 2.8 to 4.1.

The quakes come amid increased activity in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Strong tremors recently occurred in Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Taiwan and the Pacific Islands.
