Employers of Joanna Demafelis Now in Custody; PNP After Her Recruiters Next!

The suspects in the murder of Kuwait OFW Joanna Demafelis have been arrested in Syria. Nader Essam Assaf and his wife. the employers of Demafelis, are now in custody after being arrested by Syrian authorities.

Nader Essam Assaf and Mona Hassoun were arrested separately in Syria. They were on the Interpol watch list for the murder of Joanna Demafelis whose body was found stuffed in a freezer in the the Assaf’s abandoned apartment in Kuwait. Authorities believe the Demafelis was put in the freezer more than a year before her discovery last month.

The discovery of Demafelis’ body was accidental. Police went to the apartment for implement an eviction order on her employers only to find the apartment empty and abandoned. However, they found a freezer running and, when they they check inside it, the gruesome find shocked Kuwaiti police. It is believed Nader Essam Assaf and Mona Hassoun fled Kuwait shortly after Joanna Demafelis’ death.

After their arrest, Nader Essam Assaf was sent to Lebanon because he is Lebanese. Meanwhile, Mona Hassoun, a Syrian, remains in custody in Syria, according to Al Jazeera.

The Philippine government has vowed to seek justice for the OFW’s death, and is expected to exhaust all possible means to do so. Meanwhile, local authorities have now focused their attention on Demafelis’ recruiters.
