The double-decker bus fell on its side near Tai Po and hit a lamp post at high speed just before 7 PM on Saturday local time. Survivors said the driver seemed to be deliberately speeding after he was admonished by some passengers for being late. Most of the dead were from the top deck. The driver has already been arrested.

Television images showed the bus, operated by the Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) company, on its side as rescuers cut open the bus roof to free passengers still trapped inside. Some of those who perished can be seen laid out nearby covered in sheets.

An initial statement said 14 men and four women died at the scene. But, according to Channel News Asia, the death toll has since risen to 19. 63 men and three women were injured.

“The 30-year old male bus driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. He is still being detained for further enquiries,” said the official statement.
