Joanna Demafelis’ Alleged Recruiter ‘Surrenders’, But What is Her Crime?

Agnes Tuballes is now in the custody of the authorities. Tuballes is allegedly the ‘recruiter’ of Joanna Demafelis, the OFW who was found stuffed inside a freezer in Kuwait. On Thursday morning, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Joanna Demafelis’ recruiter surrendered after they announced two days earlier to have leads on her whereabouts.

But what is Agnes Tuballes guilty of? Was her recruitment illegal? Did she have anything to do with Joanna Demafelis’ death? If not, then she should not be arrested.

The PNP later clarified that Tuballes did not surrender but rather sought the help of the police to clear her name. She claims to have done nothing wrong. In fact, according to the alleged recruiter, she did not even recruit Joanna Demafelis, her distant cousin. Rather, she only referred her to a recruitment agency.

“Ni-recommend ko siya, ni-refer ko siya doon sa Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Sabi ko doon ka mag-apply kasi doon free passport, no placement fee, no salary deduction. ‘Yun po ang chat namin kaya napunta siya doon, nai-recommend ko siya doon kaya nakapag-abroad siya ng free at legal,” said Tuballes in an interview with the media.

Tuballes was referring to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Global E-Human Resources Inc., Joanna Demafelis’ recruitment agency. She admitted, though, that she received a referral commission of P13,000 in Demafelis’ case.
