Maynilad Water Service Interruption Continues as MWSS Steps in to Fix Allocation

Areas in Quezon City, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Cavite, Manila, Navotas & Pasay still have little or no Maynilad water supply. This after Maynilad said the problem is not their fault but points to a water allocation issue with Manila Water. Now, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) has stepped in with an ultimatum.

Fix the water allocation issue among yourselves (Maynilad and Manila Water) or face possible cancellation of your concession. This was the warning of the MWSS.

“Ang commitment is ayusin nila today… (or else?) they will lose their concession if that is provided in the law,” MWSS Administrator Reynaldo Velasco told ABS CBN News.

Maynilad customers in parts of Quezon City, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Cavite, Manila, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Navotas and Pasay have been receiving intermittent water supply for the past several days. Maynilad has blamed this on the allocation of water between them and Manila Water, which used to be 60% to 40%, respectively. But, according to Maynilad, their allocation went down last week and this was the reason why there was a shortage in their water service.

Maynilad needs to get a minimum of 2,360 MLD of raw water so it can maintain the level of stored water in its Bagbag Reservoir and prevent service levels for its customers to be affected.

Maynilad is entitled to 60% of raw water from the Ipo Dam, while Manila Water gets the remaining 40%. However, since April 1, Maynilad has been getting less than the 60% raw water allocation that it is entitled to receive. This depleted Maynilad’s stored water in the Bagbag Reservoir.

Maynilad pointed out the problem to the sluice gate which was being controlled by Manila Water.

The allocation was further decreased on Monday, according to Maynilad, resulting to a wider area with little or no water supply.

According to ABS CBN News, the sluice gate is now under the control of the MWSS which, at the same time, directed both water concessionaires to iron out their allocation issues.

Meanwhile, the following areas will experience low water supply on Wednesday, according to Maynilad’s advisory in its Facebook page.
