Miss Turkey World 2017 Dethroned Hours After Winning Due to Controversial Tweet

Itir Esen, the 18-year old Miss Turkey 2017, has been dethroned. Miss Turkey organizers stripped Esen of her crown just hours after winning the title after a past tweet was uncovered. Esen was supposed to represent Turkey in Miss World 2017 in China in December.

In July 15, 2017 on the anniversary of Turkey’s coup attempt, Itir Esen posted a tweet about her period and referenced the coup where almost 250 people died fighting for the country. In her tweet, Esen said her period represented the blood of the ‘martyrs’ of the coup.

“I am having my period this morning to celebrate the July 15 martyrs’ day. I am celebrating the day by bleeding a representation of our martyrs’ blood,” Esen wrote on Twitter.

Immediately after the tweet came to light, pageant organizers held a long meeting to discuss the situation and verify the post. And on September 22, Friday, they announced their decision:

“We regret to say that this tweet has been tweeted by Itir Esen. It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organisation to promote such a post, when it aims to introduce Turkey to the world and contribute to its image.”

For her part, Itir Esen apologized for being misunderstood and posted a statement saying she was not being political when she made the tweet.

“I want to say that as a 18-year-old girl, I had no political aims while sharing this post,” the dethroned Miss Turkey said. “I was raised with respect for the homeland and the nation.”

The first runner up, Asli Sumen, is now Miss Turkey World 2017 and she will travel to China later this year for Miss World 2017.
