Miss Venezuela Suspended Amid Prostitution, Corruption & Harassment Claims

The Miss Venezuela pageant, the most successful national pageant franchise, is in trouble. The Miss Venezuela beauty pageant has been suspended after past contestants accused each other of prostitution and corruption, and some government officials of sexual harassment.

The scandal began when a corruption investigation on the state oil company was launched last year. Some former Miss Venezuela contestants came forward and testified that other contestants benefited from the corruption. Allegedly, former contestants engaged in prostitution after receiving money, gifts, and even cars from government officials in exchange for sex. Former contestants also allegedly received funds intended for charity.

The Miss Venezuela scandal is a big blow to the organization which has been a national pride. Venezuela is the most successful country in international beauty pageants having produced seven Miss Universe winners, six Miss World title-holders, seven Miss International winners and two for Miss Earth. It has also produced dozens of winners in other international pageants.

An internal investigation is ongoing amid the suspension of all pageant activities. But whatever the result may be, the scandal may have forever tarnished the image of future Miss Venezuela winners.
