Munoz was only 19 when she and her sister were murdered in 2014. The Miss Honduras World winner was just about to leave to take part in the Miss World pageant in London when they were killed. In court, the judge heard that jealousy was the reason.

Plutarco Ruiz was the boyfriend of Maria Jose Alvarado Munoz’s sister, Sofia Trinidad Alvarado, who was with her that fateful night. They had just come from a party where Ruiz saw Sofia dance with another man. On their way home, Ruiz killed them both in a fit of rage and buried their bodies in a shallow grave.

The sentence was originally handed down on May 5, 2017. The Supreme Court recently affirmed the conviction and sentenced Ruiz to 45 years in prison.
