NCR Minimum Wage Increased to P512/Day But Labor Groups Still Unhappy

Great news to workers in Metro Manila: Your minimum wage has increased! The minimum wage in NCR is now P512/day, an increase of P21 per day from P491. The NCR Wage Board has approved the increase Thursday.

Despite the increase, labor groups are still unhappy because the increase is way below what they were asking for.

In June, the Associated Labor Unions (ALU) asked for a P184 increase on minimum wage, while the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) demanded P259.

“The P21 increase in daily wage remains insufficient for families to cope with rising prices of goods and increasing costs of goods. P21 is only 4.27% of the current P491. So it obviously did not lift workers out of poverty. Workers who helped built a high economic growth of 6.9% average gross domestic product do not deserve this very small amount,” said ALU-TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay.
