OFW Domestic Helper Forced to Drink Clorox by Saudi Arabian Employer

Another overseas Filipino worker (OFW) abuse has been reported in Saudi Arabia. A domestic worker, Agnes Mancilla, is in serious condition after being forced to drink bleach by her Saudi Arabian employer in Jizan.

According to the report of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Agnes Mancilla was rushed to the King Fahd Central Hospital in Jiza by members of the Filipino community on April 2 after she was forced to drink clorox, or household bleach. She remains in serious condition after undergoing emergency medical treatment to flush out the bleach from her stomach.

Further, according to the DFA, doctors found burn marks on Mancilla’s back – proof that she was already being physically abused by her employer before the bleach incident. The OFW was unconscious when she was taken to the hospital.

The identity of Agnes Mancilla’s employer was not released but the DFA said she was already arrested by police based on the complaint filed by the agency.

“We would like to assure our kababayans that we are working closely with authorities in Jizan to make sure that justice will be given to Agnes Mancilla,” said Consul General Edgar Badajos as he assured Filipinos that the Philippine government will seek justice for Mancilla.

The OFW has been working for her employer since 2016. Further investigations revealed Mancilla has not been receiving her salary.

In February, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a deployment ban to Kuwait following the discovery of the body of Joanna Demafelis inside a freezer. Investigations showed Demafelis was still alive when she was dumped in the freezer by her employers, who escaped to Syria shortly after,  more than a year before it was discovered. The employers have since been sentenced to death by hanging.
