OFW Minpa Gervacio Bags Lead Role in a HK Film About Domestic Helpers

Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Minpa Gervacio is now a film star in Hong Kong. The Pinay domestic helper bagged the lead role in a local film about domestic helpers entitled ‘Martika’. It is Gervacio’s first ever movie role.

Minpa Gervacio has been working as a domestic worker in Hong Kong for the past eight years. She said she accepted the role of Martika because it tells her story and that of thousands of other domestic workers in Hong Kong, many of whom are Filipinos like herself.

Directed by Wong Fei-pang, ‘Martika’ tells the story of a domestic helper who struggles to adjust to her new job and new surroundings, as well as her Chinese employers. At first, Wong Fei-pang said he was struggling to find the missing piece in the story but, upon seeing Minpa Gervacio, he felt that she filled that gap.

“As I was writing the script, I realised it was still lacking something, though I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. You couldn’t really feel the emotions of the character,” Wong said in an interview with the South China Morning Post.

“When we met Minpa, suddenly everything was solved. She made the character a lot more layered.”

For its part, the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong praised Gervacio for serving as an inspiration to the thousands of domestic workers in the Chinese territory.

“Mabuhay ka Ms. Gervacio at mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino sa Hong Kong!” it said on its Facebook page.
