Juan Manuel Marquez announced his retirement from boxing on August 4, 2017, a decision, he admitted, that was hard to make. He said he would have wanted one big final fight before taking a bow. However, his body is saying otherwise.

“Today is a special and sad day for me because I’m announcing my retirement. The injuries pushed me to make this decision. It hurts, but I believe the right moment to put an end to my career has arrived. I would have loved to do a final fight to say goodbye inside the ring, but I have to listen to my body, and it was telling me that the right moment to stop boxing is now,” said Marquez as quoted by ESPN Deportes TV show Golpe a Golpe.

After 21 years, 56 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw, with 40 knockouts, Marquez is saying goodbye to boxing.

During Juan Manuel Marquez retirement celebration, one of his biggest achievements was on display on his retirement cake – knocking out Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao and Marquez were bitter rivals. They sparred four times:

  • In 2004, their featherweight fight ended in a split decision draw despite Marquez being knocked down three times in the first round;
  • In 2007, Pacquiao defeated Marquez in their super featherweight encounter. Though most of the match was dead even, a knockdown in the third round proved to be decisive;
  • In 2011, Pacquiao again defeated Marquez this time in a controversial majority decision;
  • And in 2012, Marquez scored the biggest win of his career by knocking out Pacquiao in the ssixth round.
