Filipina Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison in Hong Kong for Trafficking Cocaine

A former domestic helper has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug trafficking in Hong Kong. Imelda Gimena Penascosa pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges after she was caught with about 4.4 kilos of cocaine at the Hong Kong airport in 2016.

44-year old Imelda Gimena Penascosa worked as a domestic helper in Macau for some years. There she had a relationship with a foreigner who convinced her to move to Dubai to set up a business. It was in Dubai where she reportedly met several Filipinos who asked her to bring several boxes of chocolates to the Philippines. However, the boxes did not contain chocolates as Penascosa later learned.

En route to Manila, Imelda Penascosa was arrested during a stopover in Hong Kong in February 2016 after local authorities inspected her baggage and found the three boxes, which turned out to contain pellets of cocaine – around 4.4 kilos in all valued at around HK$4.8 million!

Under Hong Kong’s Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking drug trafficking is a serious offense with a maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
