Pope Francis Sends Condolences to Cebu After Death of Cardinal Vidal

Pope Francis has extended his condolences to the people of Cebu after the death of Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal. In a message, the Pope said he is deeply saddened upon hearing of Cardinal Vidal’s death. Meanwhile, the cardinal’s funeral schedule has been revealed.

Pope Francis likewise paid tribute to Cardinal Vidal for his dedication to the Church and his advocacy of peace for all Filipinos. The full message of Pope Francis reads:

“The Most Reverend Jose S. Palma, Archbishop of Cebu,

Deeply saddened to learn of the death of Cardinal Ricardo Vidal, I extend my sincere condolences to you, and to the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu. “Joining with you in expressing profound gratitude for the late Cardinal’s untiring and devoted service to the Church, and for his constant advocacy of dialogue and peace for all the people in the Philippines, I commend his soul to the infinite love and mercy of our heavenly Father. As a pledge of consolation and hope in the Lord, to all who mourn his passing in the certain hope of the Resurrection, I willingly impart my Apostolic Blessing.

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal died on Wednesday at the age of 86. His remains lie in state at the Cebu Cathedral where it will stay until Friday. He will be transferred to the St. Pedro Calungsod Shrine for the fifth anniversary of the canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod on October 21 but will be brought back to the cathedral on the same day for the continuation of his wake.

Cardinal Vidal’s funeral is scheduled pm October 26 at 9:00 AM. He will be buried at the mausoleum of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
