Veteran Actor Bernardo Bernardo Dies of Pancreatic Cancer at 73

Local showbiz industry is mourning the loss of Bernardo Bernardo. The veteran stage, TV and film actor died on Thursday according to his family. Bernardo Bernardo is believed to have died of pancreatic cancer after the actor revealed earlier this year that doctors found a tumor in his pancreas.

Bernardo’s death was confirmed by his niece is a message posted on Facebook: “Our tito Bernardo Bernardo passed away this morning, thak you for al your prayers,” she wrote. His wake is being held at St Peter’s Chapel in Quezon City, she later told ABS CBN News.

Often typecast in movies and TV in gay roles, one of Bernardo Bernardo’s most-remembered characters is ‘Steve Carpio’, Kevin Cosme’s nemesis in the long-running Dolphy sitcom ‘Home Along Da Riles’. But he had more to offer than gay roles. Bernardo was a respected theater actor who made many notable performances.

In her tribute, Lea Salonga remembered Bernardo Bernardo as the King of Siam in the local production of ‘The King and I’.

“Rest In Peace, Bernardo Bernardo. This has been heavy news to hear. Tito Bernie was my very first leading man in the very first show I ever did, The King and I (he played the King of Siam and I was one of his daughters). Kind, funny, ebullient, brilliant, big hearted. Sigh,” wrote Lea on Twitter.

In movies, Bernardo also made his mark as proven by his two Gawad Urian awards: one for his role in the Ishmael Bernal film ‘Manila By Night’ (also known as ‘City After Dark’) in 1981, and another for ‘Imbisibol’ in 2016.

Bernardo’s last two roles were in movies shown only recently – the Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Best Picture ‘Ang Larawan’, and ‘The Significant Other’.

Bernard Bernardo’s dedication and excellence in in craft is not at all surprising considering his academic background. After graduating with a degree of Bachelor of Literature in Journalism from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), he went on to get his theater training at the University of California and graduated and with a Master of Arts Degree at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts under a British Council grant.
