Russian Plane Crash Kills 71 Passengers & Crew After Takeoff in Moscow

A Russian passenger plane has crashed after taking off from Moscow. The Russian domestic Saratov Airlines had just left Moscow’s Domodedovo airport when it crashed killing all on board – 71 passenger and crew members.

According to Agence France Presse, the Russian airplane disappeared from the radar two minutes after take off. Ten minutes later, witnesses in the village of Argunovo saw a burning plane falling from the sky. Russian news agencies reported 65 passengers and 6 crew were on board.

TV images show the wreckage of the crashed burning on the snow covered ground. According to reports, because of the thick blanket of snow, rescue vehicles could not reach the crash site and rescuers had to go there by foot.  More than 150 rescue workers descended on the crash site, the report says.

The plane, an Antonov An-148, was seven years old, according to the AFP.

Russian president, Vladimir Putin, postponed a planned trip to Sochi to closely monitor the investigation. He was due to meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Monday in the Black Sea resort where the president has an official residence. Putin offered his condolences to the families of those on board.
