SM Southmall Shooting Incident Kills Pasay Councilor, Causes Panic

A shooting incident at SM Southmall caused panic among shoppers 8:30 PM Saturday. The SM Southmall shooting occurred during a mall-wide sale this weekend with the shopping complex filled with bargain hunters and diners.

Injured in the shooting was a Pasay City councilor identified as Borbie Rivera. Police said he was the target of the shooting which occurred at Door 4 of the mall. Two motorcycle-riding men are the main suspects in the shooting of Rivera, who was immediately rushed to the Asian Hospital.

UPDATE: Pasay councilor Borbie Rivera has died. According to GMA News, Rivera was declared dead on arrival at Asian Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds in his dead and body.

 

After Rivera’s shooting, gunfire further erupted when the councilor’s security detail fired back at the assailants who were able to escape.

Panic ensued when shoppers heard gunfire. Hundreds rushed to the exits to escape what they thought was gunfire coming from inside the mall. An orderly evacuation was then ordered.

SM Southmall has since been declared safe. In a statement posted on Facebook, SM Supermalls management said a temporary closure of the mall was needed to ensure the safety of everyone. But when authorities deemed it safe, Southmall was re-opened.

An investigation is ongoing.
