LOOK Dubai Flying Taxi Tests May Herald First Drone Taxi Service in the World

An ambitious project in Dubai may see the world’s first drone taxi service in the world. Dubai held test flights of the flying taxi recently in a bid to see the viability of introducing air taxi service in the rich Middle Eastern city.

German drone firm is spearheading the tests for the flying taxis – small two-seater helicopter cabins flying on 18 propellers overhead. Though the tests were done by remote control, the drone taxis are designed to fly without human intervention. Yes, no pilots!

The envisioned first drone taxi service in the world will be booked using a smartphone and an app just like Uber. The only difference is, this is driver-less.

Volocopter air taxis are designed for short-haul vertical landing and vertical take-off trips to designated destinations. Two passengers will fit into the drone taxi unit with safety assured by a list of fail-safe features: backup batteries, rotors and parachutes.

The test flights done in the presence of Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed looked promising.
