The 22nd annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been steeped in controversy largely due to their hosts. China’s iron fist was at it again and didn’t spare the big event. Reportedly, several participants were absent from the highly-anticipated event because they were refused visas.

One of these was Katy Perry who was scheduled to perform this year but was banned by the Chinese authorities because of her participation is a concert supporting Taiwan in 2015. We all know about the Once-China policy and how hard-line Beijing is about it.

Another banned participant is top model Gigi Hadid who was refused a visa because of a Twitter video she posted where she was shown squinting her eyes while holding a small Buddha statue.

“Payback was unavoidable. Those who are serious about developing careers in the Chinese market can draw lessons from this case and learn to abide by the rules in China,” said China tabloid Global Times.

But despite these pre-show controversies, the absences were largely unnoticed when the curtain was raised for the 2017 edition of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show several hours ago. Those present more than made up for the absences.

On the models side, Bella Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, Romee Strijd and Candice Swanepoel led the charge on the runway. Harry Styles, Miguel, Jane Zhang and Leslie Odom Jr., meanwhile, provided the entertainment.

The full show will be shown on CBS on November 28.
