Malacanang has finally declared the cancellation of work and classes on September 21. Finally, the #WalangPasok President Duterte has been teasing us about for the past few days has materialized. However, September 21 is still NOT a holiday, and #WalangPasok does not cover everyone.

#WalangPasok on September 21 is now official!

Classes are cancelled for September 21 but only for PUBLIC schools. Work is also suspended but only for GOV’T. OFFICES. Suspension of classes and work in private schools and companies are left to the discretion of their respective administrations.

“[September 21] is not a special non-working holiday. And we expect the proclamation shortly. However, the Acting Executive Secretary will issue a memorandum circular suspending work in government offices—both national And local—as well as classes in all public schools, state colleges and universities,” said Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella.

“Suspension of work in private companies and classes in private schools in the affected areas is left to the discretion of their responsive heads,” Abella added.

On Monday, Duterte said he might declare September 21 a special holiday as a ‘national day of protest’ in light of the planned mass actions of several groups on the anniversary of martial law. The president said these planned rallies will cause disruptions in parts of the country and he was thinking of declaring a holiday so that everybody who wants to join the protests can do so.
