#WalangPasok Jan. 24 as PISTON Sets Nationwide Jeepney Strike Over ‘Phaseout’?

Another #walangpasok day is looming on January 24. This after PISTON announced a nationwide transport / jeepney strike  on the said date to protest the government’s ‘jeepney phaseout’ plan and the ongoing “Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok” program of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

WILL CLASSES BE SUSPENDED AGAIN? As we have seen in the passed, authorities suspended classes during the transport strikes so it won’t be a surprise if another #walangpasok day is declared on January 24.  The Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) says the “Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok” program is merely a cover-up for the eventual phaseout of jeepneys from the roads.

“Ito na po ang simula o bahagi ng phaseout na pinapatupad ng gobyernong Duterte para i-promote itong marketing scheme nila ng pagbebenta nitong mga mamahalin at overpriced na sasakyan na nais daw nilang ipalit sa jeepney,” said George San Mateo of PISTON.

But government officials have denied this. They say the program is a legitimate drive to address obvious violations of many jeepney drivers which have been overlooked in the past. However, the government is now seriously implementing existing laws for the safety of commuters and the general public.

Indeed, for years, jeepney drivers and operators have gotten away with smoke belching vehicles and jeepneys that are not road-worthy. It’s about time road rules and laws are implemented to rid the streets of these hazards!!!

Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded jeepney drivers and operators that strikes are illegal.

UPDATE: So far, no announcements of #walangpasok yet for tomorrow’s strike.
