UPDATED #WalangPasok March 19 Nationwide Transport / Jeepney Strike

There will be another transport strike on March 19, Monday. Earlier today, PISTON announced that nationwide transport strike in protest of the government’s planned jeepney modernization program. Will classes be suspended? Will it be another #walangpasok day just like during previous transport strikes?

On Wednesday, PISTON said the planned jeepney / transport strike has the support of various public transportation organizations all over the country. The group said the mass action is still in protest of the Duterte administration’s plan to phase out jeepneys from the roads, which has been allegedly disguised as a modernization program.

UPDATE March 20: Malacanang declares #WALANGPASOK again today, Tuesday, due to ‘continued threats’ of a strike.

Just like during their previous protest actions, the group of public transport operators and drivers said such a move by the government will drive operators and drivers into bankruptcy. Thousands will lose their livelihoods all because of a modernization program which PISTON has dubbed as anti-poor.

But the Duterte administration is determined to push through with the program. Despite previous transport strikes and many more planned in the coming months, the government is bent on reforming the transport sector which, it says, is way overdue.
