268 Colleges & Universities Increase Tuition Fees: Is CHED to Blame?

Another round of tuition fee increases will add burden to Filipino students and their parents. This after the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) approved the tuition fee increase of 268 private colleges and universities for the school year 2017 – 2018.

Kabataan Partylist representative Sarah Elago slammed CHED for this latest tuition fee increases. Elago said the agency has long been just a rubber stamp in approving the requests for increases from greedy and unscrupulous school administrators, setting aside the welfare of Filipino students who have long suffered from the high cost of higher education in the Philippines.

With the latest increases approved by CHED, Elago said more burden is added to students and their parents, and this may result in the decrease of enrollees next school year as tuition fees have become unreachable for many.

“We have time and again raised to CHED the illegality and questionability of these fees, but CHED has remained ‘inutile’ and ‘negligent’ in addressing these concerns. What has the CHED done to address these concerns? Nothing. It has given abusive school administrators and greedy owners a free hand in milking students and parents out of every peso that they have,” said Elago.

In an announcement, CHED said the approved average tuition fee increase 6.96 percent or P86.68 per unit. The increase in other school fees, meanwhile, will be 6.9 percent or P243.

In its defense, CHED said it approved the tuition free requests based on the Education Act of 1982 (Section 42 of Batas Pambansa Blg. 232) allowing private schools to determine its rate of tuition and other school fees.
