In the announcement made Sunday, three Roman Catholic priests have been expelled from the priesthood after being found guilty in the trial. The three priests have been identified as Francisco Galvez, Antonio Molina and Jesus Delgado.

Among the three, Most Rev. Jesus Delgado is the most well-known having been a former top official of the San Salvador Diocese. Delgado is also the biographer and former secretary of murdered Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.

During the trial at the Vatican, the three Roman Catholic priests were found to be responsible for sex crimes on minors committed between 1980 and 2000. It was also revealed during the trial that Most Rev. Jesus Delgado abused a nine year old girl who is now 43 years old.

No charges have been filed against the three priests by the El Salvador government.

Pope Francis has repeatedly said that the Roman Catholic Church will not tolerate sex abuse, especially within the priesthood, and vowed to eradicate sex abuse in the Church.

Cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church began to receive public attention in the 1980s after media coverage of the issue helped to reveal dozens of cases. Most of the alleged victims were children between the ages of 11 to 14 but some reported cases said the victims were as young as 3 years old. This led to numerous allegations, investigations and convictions.
