Angela Ponce was crowned as Miss Universe Spain 2018 just a couple of hours ago. Representing Cadiz, this was not the first time Ponce tried her luck at a national beauty pageant.

In 2015, Angela joined Miss World Spain. Despite being one of the favorites, Ponce failed to make it to the final 10 contestants. It seemed, then, that Spain was not yet ready for a trans woman as a national pageant winner. After three years, times have changed.

Angela Ponce is not the first transgender woman contestant to try her luck to represent her country in Miss Universe. Earlier this year,Talleen Abu Hanna joined Miss Universe Israel 2018. She had already won Miss Trans Israel 2016 and was a runner-up in Miss Trans Star International 2016. However, Hanna lost the Miss Universe Israel 2018 title to 18-year old Nikol Rezniko.

Another transgender contestant tried her luck in Miss Universe Canada a couple of years ago and also failed.

With Angela Ponce’s win, has she opened the door for other national pageants to be more accepting of transgender contestants?

When will we see  a transgender woman compete in Miss World, Miss International, miss earth and other international pageants?
