Body of OFW Henry John Acorda, Beaten to Death in Slovakia, Arrives this Week

The remains of the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) killed in Slovakia will be repatriated this week. Slovakia will be bringing home the body of Henry John Acorda on a special flight together with his mother and two siblings.

Department of Foreign Affairs secretary, Alan Peter Cayetano, thanked the Slovakian government for their assistance in Henry John Acorda’s case. Earlier, it offered the OFW’s family a plane to bring him home to the Philippines.

According to the DFA, the offer was accepted by the family. Acorda’s mother and siblings flew to Slovakia after he was attacked. They looked after him while he was in the hospital.

Henry John Acorda was attacked in the streets of Bratislava on May 26 after intervening when he saw two women being harassed by two men. But one of the men followed and attacked the OFW. CCTV video captured the attack on Acorda. He died five days later in hospital.

The death of Acorda elicited public outrage in Slovakia. News reports showed thousands rallying in the streets of Bratislava to call for justice. Many more placed flowers, candles and messages of sympathy on a makeshift memorial near where he was attacked.

His attacker, identified as Jura H., has been arrested and charged with manslaughter.
