A Xiamen Airlines plane from China is blocking the NAIA international runway after an accident Thursday night. The Chinese plane, with 157 on board, skidded off the runway and remains there as an investigation ensues.

Just before midnight Thursday, amid heavy rain, the Xiamen Airlines plane ‘crash landed’ and skidded off the tarmac. It remains lodged on the soft soil of NAIA and airport officials have said the airport runway will remain closed until 4 PM!

Why the delay in removing the plane? There is a process to it, according to airport officials. Engineers just can’t remove the plane because a full investigation has to be done.

“May procedure ho ‘yan eh. Kumbaga, SOCO ‘yan, hindi pwedeng basta hilahin ‘yan dahil kailangan ng imbestigador mo na makita yung naging cause nung insidente,” CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told DZBB.

“Ike-clear ho yung runway dun sa tinatawag nating foreign objects o debris para maging safe sa landing at touchdown ng susunod na eroplano na lilipad after we declare it operational,” he added.

Likewise, it is understood that the full investigation is needed to determine the extent of liability of Xiamen Airlines. There will be huge fines, of course.

All 157 passengers and crew of the plane are safe. They were immediately evacuated via emergency chutes and taken to the airport where they were fed and given blankets. The passengers are now billeted at a nearby hotel.

Meanwhile, dozens of flights have been affected. Flights of bigger planes have either been cancelled or diverted. Many are delayed thus causing a chaotic scene at NAIA.

Passengers with flights today have been advised NOT to go the NAIA without checking their flight status because they may just add to the congestion at NAIA.
