How Pinoys Reacted to Sen. Cynthia Villar’s Unli Rice Ban Proposal

Unlimited rice promos, aka unli-rice, in restaurants should be banned, so proposed Senator Cynthia Villar. Unli rice is bad for the health, says Villar, who  said encouraging unli vegetables instead. This triggered an avalanche of reactions from many Pinoys many of whom are obviously rice lovers.

“I think we should learn how to eat vegetables because it’s healthier. Kasi sasabihin mas mura ang rice sa vegetables eh ang mahal naman magpagamot ng diabetes,” said Sen. Cynthia Villar during a hearing on rice production and consumption at the Senate. Villar is chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food.

During the hearing, issues such as the Philippines’ rice self sufficiency was tackled, as well as our current consumption, in the wake of looming rice shortages which has driven prices upwards.

“Ipagbawal na yang unlimited rice, masama yan. Pagbawal na natin yang unlimited rice kasi nagkakasakit tayo gawa ng unlimited rice na yan; we should learn how to eat vegetables,” Villar added.

UPDATE: No Unli-Rice Ban Senator Cynthia Villar clarified that she was not trying to ban unli-rice, nor was she intending to file a bill banning unli-rice. Villar said it was just a genuine expression on her part that was misunderstood and eventually snowballed when picked up by social media.

“I just voiced out my concern that eating too much rice is one of the main causes of high blood sugar that leads to diabetes,” said Villar. “It is their choice. It was just a genuine expression of concern on my part.”
