As Supreme Court Chief Justice Teresita De Casto retires today, all eyes are on Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio to replace her. But will Duterte appoint Carpio as chief justice given their differences in policy?

Carpio is the most senior among the nominees for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He is naturally the ‘automatic’ choice for the position if Duterte would follow seniority. That’s what he said when he chose De Castro for the position less than two months ago.

Back then, Antonio Carpio declined his nomination after the ouster of Maria Lourdes Sereno. This time, however, Carpio was quoted as saying there is no more reason to decline.

It seems, the only reason for Carpio not the be chief justice is if Duterte bypasses him. Will he?

Asked about this by Malacanang reporters, Duterte said he has not decided yet.

“I will decide when I cross the bridge,” said the president.
