Family, friends and classmates are mourning the death of Filipino-American Alaina Punzalan Housley. An 18-year old student, Alaina was among twelve people killed when a former US Marine opened fire at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

Alaina Punzalan Housley was an English major student at Pepperdine University. According to her Filipino grandfather, Alaina was with her friends enjoying a night out when ex-Marine Ian David Long opened fire at the Borderline Bar and Grill in the latest mass shooting in the United States.

Long was among the dead. His body was later found in the office of the bar.

Most of the fatalities were college students. Borderline Bar and Grill is popular among students in the area and, on Wednesday night, it hosted a College Country Night.

“Napagod yung aming apo sa pagsasayaw [sa bar]. Umupo, nagpahinga. At the same time, dumating ‘yung shooter. Yung mga kasama niya (Alaina), nakatakbo. Siya hindi nakatakbo kasi nakaupo,” Alaina’s grandfather, Ernie Punzalan from Bataan, told GMA News.

Mr. Punzalan added that his granddaughter was a straight A student who wanted to pursue a law degree.
