Filipino Caregiver & Elderly Employer Killed in Tragic HK Bus Accident

An elderly woman and her Filipino caregiver were killed after being run over by a bus in Hong Kong. The two fatalities were crossing a street in Kowloon when the tourist bus hit them and dragged the two for a few meters before stopping. The identities of the old woman and her Filipino caregiver were not released.

According to reports from Hong Kong, the Pinoy caregiver and the 85-year old woman were crossing the street when the speeding bus hit them last June 15. Initial investigation revealed there was a green light for pedestrians and the tourist bus may have run a red light.

They may also have been some mechanical failure on the bus because police said it clipped a street sign and hit a traffic light before running over the pedestrians. A breathalyzer revealed the bus driver had no alcohol in his system.

The accident happened at around 10AM in To Kwa Wan near the old airport of Kai Tak while the pair were on their way to breakfast. The old woman’s son-in-law said she had difficulty in walking and needed assistance for the caregiver at all times. The 58-year old Filipino had been working for them for the past 10 years.

The two victims were trapped under the bus after being hit, according to several reports, and it took rescuers about 10 minutes to retrieve them. unfortunately, the old woman was dead on the spot while her Filipino carer died later in hospital due to injuries.

The driver, whose bus had 31 Chinese tourists from the mainland, faces jail of up to ten years if convicted.
