Gilas Players Suspended by FIBA Due to Brawl Likely Suspended in PBA as Well

The waiting game continues for the disciplinary action of FIBA on Gilas Pilipinas and Australian players involved in the brawl last Saturday. Definitely, there will be suspensions. The only question now is how long.

As the prospect of suspensions for the Gilas Pilipinas players loom, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) also awaits the FIBA decision. Most likely, Gilas players in the league will also be suspended from the PBA since the Philippines’ professional league is a FIBA-sanctioned league.

This is just what happened to Kiefer Ravena only recently, who tested positive for a banned substance during a game against Japan several months ago. Ravena has been suspended from ALL FIBA-sanctioned events for 18 months including the PBA.

Aside from the PBA, the Philippines’ roster in the 2018 Asian Games basketball event in August is also at risk!

Nine Gilas Pilipinas players were ejected from the game against Australia last Saturday: Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Andray Blatche, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar and Matthew Wright.

But aside from players, several team officials and staff may also be included in FIBA’s disciplinary action for their participation in the brawl. This is the reason why some fear that FIBA may suspend Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) as a whole.
