Grade 1 Student Takes Baby Brother to School So He Won’t Miss Class

Justin Gargacera of Magallanes, Sorsogon is no ordinary Grade 1 student. Seven-year old Justin goes to school with his baby brother in tow. No one will take care of his brother, Jomar, at home so Justin carries him to school everyday so that he won’t miss class.

Admiration poured in for Justin Gargacera when his photo went viral on social media. The Grade 1 student of Salvacion Elementary School in Magallanes wants to become a policeman someday to help his family. So he is leaving no stone unturned in order to study, including taking care of his 2-year old brother.

For this reason, Justin Gargacera will be featured on Rated K this week. “Kasi po ayaw kong mag-absent para makatapos ako ng pag-aaral at maging pulis para [matulungan] ko si lola,” Justin told Rated K.

Justin and his baby brother live with their grandparents. That is where their their mother left them when she went to Manila to work. But Justin’s lolo and lola also work selling sawali (woven bamboo mats). So Justin has no choice but to take Jomar to school with him.

Everyday, under the heat of the sun, Justin carries his little brother to school – a walk of about 30 minutes. There, Jomar sits with his big brother in class while the latter studies.
