In a decision handed down by Branch 89 of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC), Judge Cecilyn Villavert sentenced Ma. Theresa Torres to 2 to 6 years in prison, as well as demanding her to pay damages, for the death of Juan Carlo Miguel Alcantara, aka Amiel Alcanatara, and the injury suffered by his yaya.

In her testimony in court, she said that she heard a car horns and thought they were blocking the way. She then went to the driver’s seat to move the van. As the vehicle moved forward, it hit Amiel Alcantara and his yaya who were crossing the street.

Witnesses said the van was traveling at around 40 to 60 kph when it hit the two victims before coming to a full stop after slamming into two cars. Amiel was pinned down by the van’s wheels and died in the arms of their driver as he was being rushed to hospital.

Ma. Theresa Torres was later overheard telling ADMU guards that she stepped on the accelerator instead of the breaks.
