Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III is seeking re-election in the Senate in 2019 but this is in jeopardy. A disqualification case was filed against Koko Pimentel in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) by Atty. Ferdinand Topacio.

According to Topacio’s disqualification complaint, Pimentel is already on his second consecutive term in the Senate and is thus disqualified to run again next year.

According to the Constitution, senators cannot run for a third successive term.

Koko Pimentel ran for senator in 2007. Initial results said he lost but, after he filed an electoral protest against Migs Zubiri, Pimentel was proclaimed the winner in 2011. He ran again and won in 2013.

It is for this reason that Topacio claims Pimentel is already on his second consecutive term as senator even though he only served two years of his first term.

But Pimentel’s camp is confident the Comelec will junk Topacio’s petition.
