“I Dissent!”: SC Spokesman Theodore Te Disagrees with Sereno Ouster

Minutes after Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno’s ouster, Supreme Court spokesman Theodore Te voiced his disagreement with the decision. In a social media post, Theodore Te wrote, “I Dissent!”

Te was appointed by Sereno as SC spokesman in 2012. He and the former Chief Justice were former colleagues at the University of the Philippines College of Law. According to the Inquirer, aside from being a law professor, Te is also a part of the Free Legal Assistance Group, the oldest and largest group of human rights lawyers.

Maria Lourdes Sereno was ousted as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In a landmark quo warranto case, Sereno was ousted by a vote 8-6 on Friday after allegedly failing to meet the integrity requirement for members of the judiciary.

In his quo warranto case filed before the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Jose Calida said Maria Lourdes Sereno failed to file the insufficient number of Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) before the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) during her application as chief justice in 2012.
