52-year old Michael Fariñas, nephew of Congressman Rodolfo Fariñas and a member of the powerful political dynasty in Ilocos province, was driving in Barangay Vira when the accident happened Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses said the black Mercedez Benz G-Class SUV was cruising at top speed when it came to a sharp curve at the bypass road and crashed into the concrete barrier. The SUV then rolled into the adjacent rice field several times.

Fariñas and his companion, SPO3 Melchor Geronimo, his security detail, were immediately rushed to the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital but the vice mayor was declared dead on arrival. Geronimo survived.

Netizens wondered why the Mercedes Benz G-Class SUV, costing from P8 million to P12 million, was not able to protect the vice mayor despite its security features. However, initial investigations have revealed that Michael Fariñas was not wearing a seat belt. His security detail, on the other hand, was trapped in.

Fariñas was on his second term as Laoag City vice mayor after serving as mayor for three consecutive terms. His wife, Chevylle, is the current mayo of Laoag.
