Super Typhoon Ompong maintained its strength on Wednesday night after entering the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) hours earlier. #OmpongPH is still on course for Northern Luzon and may further intensify that will necessitate a Signal #4 or Signal #5.

According to the latest update on Typhoon Ompong from PAGASA, the cyclone was located 1,005 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes as of 10:00 PM of Wednesday. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph and moving at 20 kph in a west northwest direction.

SCROLL DOWN FOR LATEST UPDATES Earlier as Typhoon Mangkhut, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has already classified it as a ‘super typhoon’. However, the JTWC and PAGASA have different criteria in classifying typhoons so it stays as a ‘typhoon’ for now. But if #OmpongPH intensifies further, PAGASA may declare it as a ‘super typhoon’.

Signal #1 is currently hoisted over Catanduanes and Camarines Sur. More areas may be placed under Signal #1 tomorrow. By Thursday, Ompong is forecast to be 875 kilometers East of Baler, Aurora province.

According to this weather forecast by GMA Network’s Mang Tani, there is a possibility that Signal #4 or Signal #5 may be declared by the time Typhoon Ompong makes landfall in northern Cagayan. But even if its doesn’t and only reached Signal#3, #OmpongPH is still a very powerful typhoon and everybody should be prepared.
