Robredo received a message from President Rodrigo Duterte that she had been fired from the Cabinet Sunday. The text message, relayed to the vice president by Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco, advised Leni Robredo to stop attending Cabinet meetings starting Monday, December 5, due to ‘irreconcilable differences’ with Duterte.

In a statement announcing her resignation, Robredo said this was the last straw. She decided to resign as HUDCC chair because ‘it makes it impossible for me to perform my duties’.  Robredo also cited the major differences she has with the president ‘in principles and in values’.

“Since I assumed office, I have been consistent in my opposition to issues such as the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, extra-judicial killings, reinstating death penalty, lowering the age of criminal liability, and sexual attacks against women,” she said.

“But we both had a mandate to serve the people. I had hoped that this shared commitment to the poor and marginalized would transcend the differences between us. So, I took the job of Housing Secretary when it was offered to me,” Robredo added.

Robredo is the third top official to resign from the Duterte administration. In October, the head of the Governance Commission for Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations, Jaime Ma. Flores, quit his post. And, just last week, National Historical Commission of the Philippines chairperson Maria Serena Diokno resigned in protest of the Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
