Driver’s license cards will be released starting November 19 said the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in an announcement. All drivers with pending driver’s license applications from January 1 to October 16 may claim their plastic license cards at any of the 36 LTO licensing offices in Metro Manila.

The shortage in driver’s licenses has been one of the problems of the LTO for many months. It started in 2013 when the Commission on Audit (COA) disallowed payments to former supplier, Amalgamated Motor Philippines Inc., for lack of a proper contract. According to COA, the supplier had no lega basis to continue making the plastic card driver’s licenses because its contract to do so had already expired in 2006.

As a result,  a serious shortage ensued and many drivers who applied for new licenses or renewed their old ones had to make do with the LTO receipt as proof of their license, and tamped with a validity date. In many cases, these validity dates had to be extended several times as no license was still available after several months.

Thankfully, that problem seems to have been solved. According to the LTO, the release of the driver’s license starting Monday would fill the backlog of more than 700,000 in Metro Manila.

The agency also reminded the public that claiming their driver’s license is FREE. The only requirement for claiming your driver’s license is the receipt issued by the LTO.
