In March this year, a video of Olivar beating a dog the dog went viral on Facebook. However, he was not immediately apprehended as no one, including the one who took the video, reported the crime to the authorities. Maybe, he did not know it was a crime.

Animal cruelty is a crime in the Philippines under the Animal Welfare Act. Anyone found guilty of such a crime shall be punished with imprisonment or fines, or both.

In the case of Olivar, it was not until a concerned citizen saw the video on Facebook that his crime was reported. Upon seeing the video, Emma Manalili traced the address of Olivar and reported the crime to the police. And, with the help of PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society), Roberto Olivar was prosecuted and eventually convicted.

Roberto Olivar was jailed for nine days and paid the P5,000 fine meted by the Caloocan Metropolitan Trial Court No. 52. This is the first such conviction in the Philippines ever.

“May aral yung nangyari sa kin dun. Wag sana nilang paparusan yung mga hayop… sana alagaan nila,” Olivar told GMA News.
