Marine Killed in Marawi had a Premonition & Knew He was Going to Die

Thirteen Marines lost their lives in Marawi City on June 9 during an encounter with the Maute/ISIS group. Pfc. Eddie Cardona Jr. was one of those Marines now being hailed as heroes. And, apparently, Cardona knew he was going to die in Marawi. He had a premonition of his death, according to his brother, Ronel.

“I think he knew he was going to die and he was ready for it. He knew that he was going to war,” said Ronel, as quoted by Gabriel Cardinoza for the Inquirer.

Days before going to Marawi to engage with the Maute rebels, Pfc. Eddie Cardona Jr. was on a short break in Manila where he met his older brother. Ronel said Eddie was unusually happy and joked a lot – jokes that sounded as if he was going away for good. Eddie also told Ronel that they should take a selfie together for they may not get another opportunity in the future.

Cardona died with 12 other Marines on June 9 in Marawi City. Hours before his death, he texted Ronel and other relatives to call him for they may not be able to do so again. Hours later, Ronel said he texted Eddie but he no longer replied.

Ronel is convinced Eddie was preparing them for this eventual death. Their bonding in Manila, his texts to friends and family and his behavior days before leaving indicated Eddie knew his deployment may be his last.

Cardona even cleaned his locker and washed all his clothes in his barracks in Fort Bonifacio before leaving. He also left his ATM card with friends to give to his family in case something happened to him.
