After PH Bowed Out, Miss Universe 2018 in Macau or Korea: Chavit Singson

Miss Universe 2018 will either be in Macau or South Korea. That’s what Chavit Singson revealed in a recent interview. Singson, who bankrolled Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines, seems to be privy to the behind-the-scenes negotiations of Miss Universe Organization (MUO).

Where will Miss Universe 2018 be held? Macau, or South Korea?

According to Singson, he was with MUO president Paula Shugart during the group’s inspection of facilities in China earlier this year. Hangzhou was supposed to host the pageant. But that negotiations fell through after China thumbed down a live telecast due to its strict censorship policy. Instead, China offered Macau.

“Ang Miss Universe, kasama ko sila, ibinibigay sa akin, kasama ko sila sa China, nag-inspeksyon, lahat, so ever since, sinabi ko na, hindi puwede dito sa Pilipinas,” said Singson as quoted by PEP.

As we reported earlier, the Philippines almost hosted Miss Universe 2018. In fact, former Department of Tourism (DOT) chief Wanda Teo said it was almost a 90% done deal after China backed out. But then, the corruption scandal at the DOT unraveled and Teo was ousted. New DOT secretary Berna Romulo Puyat thumbed down the hosting of the pageant eventually.

“Sa China, wala pang ano sa China, live show ever since. So, hindi puwede sa China, sabi ng China government, puwede sa Macau,” Singson revealed.

“Ang pagpipilian lang, Macau or Korea.”

If South Korea will host the pageant, there’s a possibility that North Korea will participate, according to Singson.

In the same interview, the businessman revealed that co-investors still owe him around $2 million from the Miss Universe 2016 pageant.
