Miss Universe 2019 in Boracay, Philippines to Show Off Island After Rehabilitation?

Miss Universe 2019 is more than a year away and yet Philippine officials are already talking about hosting it. And in Boracay, no less! And the idea to host Miss Universe 2019 in Boracay came from President Rodrigo Duterte himself, according to Department of Tourism secretary Wanda T. Teo.

According to Teo, hosting the Miss Universe pageant in Boracay would be a way to reintroducing the island resort to the world after it has completed its rehabilitation. Boracay is set to be closed for six months (at least) starting April 26 for a much needed rehabilitation. This after Duterte described the island, once described as a paradise, as a ‘cesspool’. Various environmental violations have also been discovered since inspections were conducted last month.

The Philippines last hosted Miss Universe in 2016 when Pia Wurtzbach turned over her crown to Miss France, Iris Mittenaere. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) has since tried to convince the country’s officials to host the pageant again in 2017 and 2018 but the Philippines begged off.

Last month, it was reported that Miss Universe 2018 would be held in Hangzhou, China though no official announcement has yet been made as of this writing.

Wanda Teo said her department would be proud to show off Boracay to the world and showcase the changes that would be done during the rehabilitation. And, knowing MUO and how much it has pushed for another Philippine-hosted pageant, it would be a done deal once the DOT formally notifies it of its intention.

Of course, just like during the 2016 hosting, all costs will be shouldered by private sponsors.
