PH Cargo Vessel Rams US Navy Battleship Off Japan, 7 Sailors Missing

Seven sailors are missing after a collision between a US Navy destroyer and Philippine cargo ship near Japan. The USS Fitzgerald sustained damage in the collision with the much bigger cargo ship, partially flooding the former.

The Japanese coast guard said it received the emergency call at around 2:20 AM Saturday local time from the Philippine cargo vessel ACX Crystal which was on its way to Tokyo from Nagoya. The cargo ship told the Japanese coast guard that it had collided with the US Navy battleship.

Three were injured on the USS Fiztgerald including its commander, Bryce Benson. All three have been airlifted to Japan. Meanwhile, seven American sailors are missing presumably thrown overboard during the impact. A search is ongoing. The identities of the missing have not been released.

There have been no reports about any Filipino seamen involved in the accident. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is still coordinating with those concerned about Filipino nationals involved in the accident.
